In BC and Ontario, they’ve targeted LifeLabs, which was quietly bought up by the American company, Quest Diagnostics, in summer 2024.
Quest Diagnostics is a Fortune 500 giant that profited greatly off the COVID-19 crisis, raking in a record $3B for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2020.
This company and its multimillionaire CEO & President James Davis have deep pockets from the profit they make off America’s private healthcare system.
Meanwhile, the skilled professionals in BC working at LifeLabs are struggling with low wages and poor working conditions to increase Quest’s profit margin.
For the last eleven months, workers have been trying to change this by negotiating a new contract, but LifeLabs won’t come to the table with a reasonable offer. In fact, from B.C. to Ontario, LifeLabs has a track record of fighting its workers when it comes to negotiating fair contracts.
LifeLabs workers in BC have been forced to strike for fair wages and working conditions.
The contract LifeLabs workers end up getting with the new owner will tell us a lot about the quality of services we can expect in the next few years. If workers are paid fairly, have the benefits they need, and don’t have to worry about chronic understaffing, that means LifeLabs will be able to keep up with demand and provide the kind of accurate, reliable services we all expect.
Send an email to the CEOs of LifeLabs and Quest to tell them that workers and those that depend on LifeLabs’ services deserve better.
